In “Other” Words…

Quote by Richard Cecil

I am going to approach this quote a little different. I am going to break it down and let the book of Job speak for me.

WE ARE URGENT ABOUT THE BODY:

Job 2:4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

HE IS ABOUT THE SOUL:

But Job learned there was more to life than loss and pain:

God said, “”Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!”

Job replies,

Job 42:3 You (God) asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?’
(Job replied) Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

WE CALL FOR PRESENT COMFORTS:

Job wanted the pain of life to go away, he wants peace.

Job 3: 24 -26 “For sighing comes to me instead of food; my groans pour out like water

What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happen to me.

I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.”

HE CONSIDERS OUR EVER LASTING REST:

Job 38:1 “Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm.”

God is there with us, I love the phrase “out of the storm. “

Job 38:2 God asks: “Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge.”

Do you know everything God asks? Are you the one responsible for all things? Then do not be wrapped up in present comforts, do not speak “words without knowledge.

AND THEREFORE WHEN HE SENDS NOT THE VERY THINGS WE ASK:

Job 3:3 “May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, ‘A boy is born!’”

HE HEARS US BY SENDING GREATER THAN WE CAN ASK OR THINK:

Job 42:12 “The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first.”

Head on over to Loni’s, she is our gracious host today.

  1. What a wonderful approach to answer today’s IOW quote with Scripture – what hope it gives :) …I always marvel about Job. He stood firm in the Lord and trusted that God will see him through somehow…He is a great example to me…

I should find the book “Heaven’s Wager” and send it to you. I know it is somewhere around here :) .

Blessings on your day and always…

  2. There are so many lessons we can learn from Job’s life. Thanks for sharing your take on this quote.

  3. now that was great! When we feel we are suffering we just need to read Job to feel better about our lives eh? lol. It’s amazing how God blesses us when we really follow Him

  4. What a unique way to look at that quote Laurel. Job’s story – to be honest – both frightens and encourages me. He suffered so much loss – but there was so much gain. In the end, I think, he learned to trust God in all things – even those things we just cannot understand.
Thank you for this. It was wonderful.

  5. Wow, Laurel! This is so awesome, it could easily be used as a devotional. What a cool idea.

As always, I’m so impressed by your blog.

  6. Just wanted to let you know I am praying for you and your doctor’s appt. Hang in there-keep me posted.

  7. Laurel,
I love how you broke it down and paralleled it against scripture.
What a wonderful picture you have given us in the life of Job.
    Blessings!

  8. This was great – I knew when I saw the quote there would be great posts out there on this. This was one of them.

  9. Great quote, and great reflections. You know, I am always challenged when I remember Job wasn’t present for that conversation between Satan and God, so had no idea of the spiritual implications of all that was happening to him, yet he stayed true to his God, refusing to “curse God and die.”

    Great reflections, Laurel, as always…

  10. I love your take on this quote… very good. Thanks for sharing!

I hope you remember me – Crystal from Crown!
